Vegetarian Lifestyle

Host Siri Phaneendra was born into a very strict vegetarian family. With that mindset instilled from a young age, she found solace in gardening and nature. In a raised bed, she planted tomatoes, chilis, zucchini, broccoli, and more. She talks about the nutritional value of eating a rainbow of vegetables and fruits. She interviews Lucia Rivera, an intern with The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG), a leading non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on vegetarianism and veganism and the interrelated issues of health, nutrition, ecology, ethics, and world hunger. Lucia talks about being a vegetarian Latina, the challenges for teens, and instructs us on the differences between being vegan, pescatarian, and vegetarian. Many people choose to be vegetarian to protest the abuse of animals, others choose this lifestyle for health reasons, or because they can’t afford meat or fish. Reporter Katelyn Darrow wraps up the show by focusing on being a vegetarian to save the environment. She states that she prefers to say that her food choices are mostly plant based. Living a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is a deeply personal choice. Whatever the reason, people are choosing to exclude meat from their diet.

-VRG Bio: Lucia Rivera is a teenager from Southern California. She has been vegetarian for 9 years and is a long distance intern for the Vegetarian Resource Group. Lucia is part of several student organizations at her school and spends time volunteering in her community.
