“We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” Immanual Kant

Everyone needs to find a safe place and in today’s episode host Katie Choo interviews Marlene Richter, Executive Director of Noah’s Animal House, the first animal sanctuary to be built onsite with a domestic violence shelter in the United States located in Nevada. Noah’s Animal House allows victims of abuse to find shelter and protection while bringing their beloved pets with them. Many of these animals have been harmed as a way to scare the human victims. It is a critical service that has saved lives, helped families heal together while safely in a shelter, and has taught all of us that are victim advocates how unconditional love creates healing in the most broken situations. Katie reads the chapter, The Gift of Animals by Heather Brittany from the forthcoming book, Be the Star You Are! for Millennials and also offers intriguing careers for those interested in becoming a social worker or animal welfare coordinator. Noah’s Animal House is a model for what the world needs now…humans and their animal families sheltering together.

Bio Marlene Richter is a licensed Social Worker and has championed the development of programs to assist persons and families in crisis in Nevada for 22 years. She is an Air Force veteran and is educated in social work and ethics and policy studies from UNLV. As Executive Director of Noah’s Animal House, she enjoys celebrating the healing bond of pets and people recovering from trauma. With deep compassion for the communities in our state, Marlene served the rural community as Chair of The Substances of Abuse Task Force in Nye County, was a steering committee member of The Southern Nevada Human Trafficking Task Force, a founding board member of the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, and an advisory committee member for the Saint Therese Center. She shares her experience in working with victims as an expert and has been a national speaker and trainer on the topic of Identifying and Serving Victims of Human Trafficking. Currently she is an Advisory Committee Member for Ethics in the Marketplace, and serves as Vice-Chair of the Las Vegas Community Investment Corporation Advisory Board. Previous leadership positions include Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, WestCare Nevada, and The Shade Tree. Web site: www.noahsanimalhouse.org
