Though we teens may believe that we are acting with complete independence from their wishes, parents definitely have a large impact on us in this aspect.

The duo interview Dr. Donald Moses, co-author of the book, Raising Independent, Self-Confident Kids. Dr. Moses explains clearly the importance of allowing kids to fail as well as helping them develop skills that will assist them to be fully functional adults rather than resorting to self-destructive behaviors. He talks about drugs and salaries in a no nonsense manner. Selected as one of the "Leading Physicians of the World" in the field of psychiatry, Donald A. Moses, MD is a psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of adolescents and young adults. He has many years of experience in treating patients with psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy, which has given him a clear understanding of the importance of children developing particular skills so that they later can be functional adults rather than resort to self-destructive behavior and difficulty functioning. He is the co-author, with Wendy Moss, PhD, of Raising Independent, Self-Confident Kids: Nine Essential Skills to Teach Your Child or Teen and The Tween Book: A Growing-Up Guide for the Changing You, and the author of several books, including, Are You Driving Your Children to Drink: Coping with Teen-age Alcohol and Drug Abuse. http://www.apa.org/pubs/books/
