Independence Day and Liberty-Loving Lafayette
Our Nerd Extraordinaire, Keerthi, provides an impromptu history class at peak summer break time, (just in case you are having too much fun)on the lead-up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence from the perspective of a debater. Her comical history lesson is fast, furious, and fabulous. Host, Ruhani, interviews author, Dorothea Jensen with her newest book, Liberty-Loving Lafayette: How America’s Favorite Fighting Frenchman Helped Win Our Independence. Inspired by Hamilton, the Musical, this short, playful, rhyming history for teens can be read or performed in 20 minutes! This unique history includes a glossary, extensive endnotes, and classic pictures to supply further information about the historical figures and events mentioned in the poem. Dorothea adores Lafayette and reads several passages from the book. In the final segment, Ruhani, expresses her sadness and outrage about the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe versus Wade, a disastrous, regressive decision that will negatively affect millions of women and families. She provides information on where and how women can still legally get an abortion and believes that laws will be different and better when her generation (teens) finally get into office. Make sure to vote for pro-choice candidates and evict any politician who wants to restrict or revert the rights of any citizen. This is America. We are supposed to be the land of the free. Bio: Dorothea Jensen
Dorothea Jensen has taught middle and high school English, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in South America, and performed as an actress-singer in many stage productions. She has authored five rhyming 21st century Christmas stories about high tech elves, and two award-winning historical novels about the American Revolution for young readers, THE RIDDLE OF PENNCROFT FARM, and A BUSS FROM LAFAYETTE. Inspired by the musical, HAMILTON, Dorothea recently created a short, playful, rhyming narrative about Lafayette, LIBERTY-LOVING LAFAYETTE. She is helping to plan the upcoming bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of the US, and to mark that journey via The Lafayette Trail, Inc. Dorothea and her husband live in a small town in New Hampshire. They have three grown children and six grandsons.
